Mike Sturgis
Drummer
Mike ?The Oracle? Sturgis is the longstanding drummer of the Funkestra and is without a doubt the rock-solid backbone of the band. His timing, groove and feel are a vital part the Funkestra sound, and he has continued to develop and adapt his approach to the art of funky drumming to suit the changing needs of the band over the years.
Mike was born in the US and is a graduate from the University of Miami, where he was able to perform and tour with the likes of Bob James, Randy Brecker and Bob Mintzer while still a student. A personal highlight from this time was a Bob James concert at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles sharing double drum kit duties with Harvey Mason.
Opportunity came knocking on his door soon after in the form of an invitation to come to the UK and play with Norwegian pop icons A-ha on their first world tour. After two years of touring and recording with A-ha, Mike went on to perform and record with rock bands such as Pyschomotel, 21Guns, Wishbone Ash and Asia. His incredibly versatile playing skills have allowed him to work with a diverse group of artists such as Lou Reed, Steve Winwood, David Bowie, Elton John, Tom Jones, Jack Bruce, Sam Brown, Lulu, Joss Stone and Paul Carrack to name just a few.
Mike is actively involved in music education and has been a contributing columnist to Rhythm magazine since 1999. He has also worked for several prestigious music colleges over the years, including the Academy of Contemporary Music (Guildford), the Detroit Institute of Music Education (Online) and the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance (London). His own tuition app Drum Gym has received enthusiastic reviews in drum publications worldwide.
