The Backstory
I met Rumer for the first time when she joined our Joni Mitchell project. Amongst other songs she sung ‘Amelia’ and ‘Don’t Interrupt the Sorrow’ which ended up on the ‘Both Sides Now’ album. I absolutely loved her mesmerising voice and performance. It was great fun to blend her style with the soulful side of the Funkestra. I went to see her concert at the Union Chapel with her band. An absolutely brilliant show and her band are fantastic too. I was really impressed and nick-named her lovingly ‘the high-priestess of the smooth’ afterwards.
Consequently I was delighted when she approached me to record some of her new material as she felt like she wanted to explore her love for Soul music a bit futher with my band. The smooth musical chemistry between her and the band it has led to the upcoming O2 Indigo show.
Burt Bacharach tribute
Aside from performing Rumer‘s best loved song from her catalogue the band will also be joined her parter Rob Shirakbari to pay tribute to the late Burt Bacharach. Rob has been closely associated with Bacharach since the mid-1980s and was was the keyboardist, arranger and music director for the legendary composer. So this is a real treat both for the audience and the band.
Special guest
Additionally we will also be joined by special guest Frank Mead (Bill Wyman and the Rhythm Kings, Gary Moore, Eric Clapton, Procul Harum to name but a few) on saxophone and harmonica. Another real treat to have UK Rhythm and Blues royalty amongst us.
Support
And last but not least a big shout out to singer-songwriter Jana Varga who not only is part of the band, she also will open up the show with a solo spot performing her original music. Some of it from her debut album which was recorded at Masterlink after we invited her for a Masterlink Sessions day with the band. A beautiful story of connectivity right there as she also joined our Joni Mitchell Re-imagination project. (Her rendition of ‘Free Man in Paris’ is also on the ‘Both Sides Now’ album).
