QUOTES
“Adding ‘Monster Funk’ to my ‘Mothership’ mix. Very good release. Has the modern jazz flavor, but is also soulful and has come FUNKY moments happening in places. Also has a ‘jam band’ element going on.”
DJ Drew | WUTK (Knoxville, TN)
“Redtenbacher delivers a virtuoso performance once again; mind-expanding stuff!”
Joe lMcIver| editor Bassguitar Magazine
“Recorded live over two days, The Hang is an utterly absorbing work that encapsulates both jazz and funk sensibilities with an aptly spontaneous grandeur, yet at the core of each track is a subtle blend that definitely favours finesse over firepower.
Tenor saxophonist Tucker Antell is exemplary throughout and gets fine support from guitarist Mike Outram. This is all capped by Dave Limina on Hammond organ which, alongside the faultless backing of master bassist Stefan Redtenbacher, Karl Vanden Bossche on percussion and drummer Mike Sturgis, make The Hang a must-listen.”

ABOUT
‘The Hang’ is the 10th fully blown album from Redtenbacher’s Funkestra, recorded live over two days at Masterlink Productions (near London/UK) by six men from the US, UK, Ghana and Austria.
The Funkestra is probably best known for being a large ensemble horn band that has featured horn sections and players from James Brown, Tower of Power, Incognito and the New Power Generation, but this is their first small ensemble recording after ‘Concubine Chronicles (Live at British Grove)’ twelve years ago.
‘The Hang’ showcases the band’s creative spontaneity and an abundance of pure performance joy recording live in the studio. The recording also features high octane soloists Mike Outram (guitar), Tucker Antell (tenor saxophone) and Dave Limina (Hammond organ) propelled forward by the long-standing engine room of drummer Mike Sturgis, Karl Vanden Bossche on percussion and bandleader/producer Stefan Redtenbacher on bass.
Unlike their previous records, almost all band members have contributed tunes for this record, resulting in a wider spectrum of musical colours. Although the influence of classic jazz-funk bands of the 70s like The Brecker Brothers, The Meters, The Crusaders and The Average White can be felt, they are putting their own stamp on the music and are not in any way striving to be a pastiche or retro act. They adhere to the belief that recording together in the studio is an art form that remains timeless.
The Funkestra – who incidentally moonlight as the ‘house band’ for the acclaimed ‘Masterlink Sessions’ featuring many of the world’s best vocal artists – has accumulated over 2 million Spotify streams with their own brand of groovy jazz-funk. Also, their extended ‘soft’ release strategy has landed two tracks on Spotify’s editorial playlists ‘Instrumental Funk’ and ‘Jazz UK’ resulting in 250,000 streams before the actual album release, a limited-edition physical CD package.
